Digital marketing is the practice of promoting a business, product or service through online channels, such as search engines, social media, email, websites and online ads, and then measuring what those efforts produce. The goal is the same as any marketing: reach the right people, earn their attention and help them take a next step, such as calling, enquiring, enrolling or buying. What makes it different is that you can usually see which actions led to which results.
I'm Gulab Chand Tejwani. I teach digital marketing at TechNet Consultancy in Vallabh Vidyanagar, Anand, and online, and I work with local businesses on their online presence. This post explains the basic ideas in plain language and shows how to choose a channel for a specific job. It makes no income or ranking promises, because results depend on the business, the market and the effort put in.
What does digital marketing mean?
Marketing means helping people find, understand and choose what you offer. Digital marketing does that online. A customer might search on Google, see a post on Instagram, read a blog, get a WhatsApp or email follow-up and then fill in a form. Digital marketing is the planning, creating and measuring across those steps.
It is not the same as "having a website" or "running ads". Those are tools. Digital marketing is the work of choosing which tools fit your goal, using them consistently and checking what happened.
What are the main digital marketing channels?
A channel is a route that reaches people. Many posts list "4 types", "7 types" or "12 types" of digital marketing. Those numbers differ because authors split or merge things differently. One may count SEO and content as one item, another may count them separately, and a third may add affiliate or influencer marketing. There is no official fixed number. It is more useful to ask what job each channel does.
| Channel | Best at | Speed of results | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO (search engine optimisation) | Being found when people search for what you offer | Usually slower; builds over time | No guaranteed rankings; needs useful pages and patience |
| Paid search (e.g. Google Ads) | Capturing people already searching, quickly | Fast to start | Stops when you stop paying; needs budget and tracking |
| Paid social (e.g. Meta ads) | Reaching a defined audience who weren't searching yet | Fast to start | Attention is shorter; creative needs refreshing |
| Organic social | Showing real people, proof and consistency | Slow and uneven | Reach depends on the platform; takes regular posting |
| Email and WhatsApp follow-up | Staying in touch with people who already know you | Depends on your list size | You need permission and something worth sending |
| Content (blog, video, guides) | Answering questions and building trust | Slow; compounds over time | Needs real expertise and regular upkeep |
None of these is "best" for everyone. A business that needs enquiries next week may start with paid search or WhatsApp follow-up. One that wants steady enquiries over a year will usually build SEO and content as well.
Which channel should I use for which task?
Think in tasks first:
- "I want to be found by people searching for me." Start with SEO and a Google Business Profile for local businesses, and consider paid search if you need speed.
- "I want to be seen by people who don't know me yet." Paid social and organic social.
- "I want to build trust before people call." Content, reviews and testimonials, and consistent social presence.
- "I want to bring back people who already enquired." Email or WhatsApp follow-up.
- "I want to explain something complicated." Blog posts, short videos or guides.
A mix is normal. The skill is deciding the order and not spreading effort too thin.
What is the difference between channels, pillars and stages?
These three words get mixed up, so here they are side by side.
| Idea | Question it answers | Examples (lists vary by author) |
|---|---|---|
| Channels | Where do we show up? | Search, social, email, video, ads |
| Pillars | What do we need to build or run well? | A clear offer, a fast website, useful content, tracking and measurement, a way to respond to enquiries |
| Stages | Where is the customer in their journey? | Awareness, consideration, decision, and after-sale follow-up |
A channel is a place. A pillar is a capability that makes channels work. A stage is the customer's mindset. For example, a blog post (content channel) works at the awareness stage, while a WhatsApp reply (messaging channel) often works at the decision stage. Different teachers define pillars and stages in slightly different ways, so treat these as useful mental models, not a rulebook.
A local example: a coaching institute in Anand
This is an illustrative scenario, not a real client. Suppose a small coaching institute near Vallabh Vidyanagar wants more enquiries for its next batch.
| Task | Channel | What it might look like |
|---|---|---|
| Be found locally | SEO and Google Business Profile | Accurate listing, clear course pages, reviews from past students |
| Reach parents quickly before a batch starts | Paid search or paid social | A small, tracked campaign pointing to one enquiry page |
| Build trust | Content and organic social | Short posts on study tips, results explained honestly, teacher introductions |
| Follow up enquiries | WhatsApp or email | A reply within the same day, plus a reminder about the batch start |
| Learn what works | Analytics | Track which source each enquiry came from and where people drop off |
Notice that the plan starts with the task, not with "let's use Instagram". The institute also needs the basics in place: a clear offer, a page that loads on a phone, and someone who answers enquiries promptly. Marketing sends people to the door; the experience once they arrive still matters. For local-business basics, see our local SEO checklist for Anand businesses.
What is the role of SEO in digital marketing?
SEO is the work of making your website easier to find and more useful for people who search. It covers:
- Content: pages that actually answer what people ask.
- Technical basics: a site that loads, works on mobile and can be crawled.
- Local signals for local businesses: a complete Google Business Profile and consistent name, address and phone number.
- Trust: reviews, mentions and links from other credible sites.
SEO supports other channels too. Good pages help paid search convert, content gives social something to share, and tracking tells you which searches lead to enquiries. It is not a one-time job and has no guaranteed outcome, but it is one of the longest-lasting parts of a plan when done well.
Is digital marketing a good career?
It can be a good fit if you like a mix of writing, analysis, creative work and testing. Roles range from SEO and ads specialists to content, social and analytics roles. I can't promise salaries or placement. They vary widely by city, skills, portfolio and the employer. If you're weighing this path, read career in digital marketing.
How do I start learning digital marketing?
- Learn the vocabulary: channel, audience, funnel, conversion, analytics.
- Pick one channel and run a small practical project, for example a Google Business Profile and a blog for a real or sample business.
- Learn to read basic numbers: visits, clicks, enquiries, and where they came from.
- Add a second channel only after the first is working.

FAQ
What is digital marketing in simple words?
It is promoting a business through online channels, such as search, social media, email and websites, and measuring what those efforts achieve.
How many types of digital marketing are there?
It depends who you ask. Lists of 4, 7 or 12 appear because authors group channels differently. Rather than counting, decide what task you need done and pick the channel that does it.
Is SEO the same as digital marketing?
No. SEO is one channel inside digital marketing. A full plan may also include paid ads, social media, email and content.
Which digital marketing channel is best for a small local business?
There's no single best. Many local businesses start with a Google Business Profile and basic SEO, plus fast follow-up on WhatsApp, and add paid ads or social once the basics work.
What is the difference between channels and pillars?
Channels are where you reach people, such as search or email. Pillars are the capabilities that make channels work, such as good content, a solid website and measurement.
Do I need to code to learn digital marketing?
Not for most beginner tasks. You'll use dashboards and editors. Analytics, tag management and some SEO work are easier if you are comfortable with spreadsheets and simple technical ideas.
Can digital marketing guarantee leads or sales?
No. It improves your chances of being found and chosen. Results depend on your offer, competition, budget, consistency and how well you respond to enquiries.
