Local SEO Checklist for Businesses in Anand: Google Business Profile, Citations and Reviews

Local SEO is how your business shows up when someone nearby searches for what you sell, like "AC repair Anand" or "computer classes near me". Google says local results are ranked on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews and links). You can't change your distance, so this checklist focuses on the two you can: a complete, accurate Google Business Profile, consistent business details across the web, a steady flow of genuine reviews, and a website with a clear page for each service and area.

I'm Gulab Chand Tejwani, founder of TechNet Consultancy in Vallabh Vidyanagar, Anand. We do SEO and digital marketing for local businesses and also teach SEO, so this checklist is the one we actually work through when we start with a new client. Print it, tick it off, and you'll be ahead of most businesses in your category.

How does Google rank local businesses?

Google's own help page, "Tips to improve your local ranking on Google", lists three factors and says plainly that there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads appear above the map results, but they're labelled as ads and don't change your organic position.

Google's three local ranking factors: relevance, distance and prominence, with what a business can control in each
Relevance and prominence are yours to improve. Distance is fixed. Source: Google Business Profile Help.

In practice, that means:

  • Relevance comes from your categories, services, business description and website content.
  • Distance is fixed. A shop in Vallabh Vidyanagar won't usually show for someone standing in central Nadiad, however good its profile is.
  • Prominence comes from reviews (count and rating), mentions of your business across the web, links to your website, and how well your site ranks in normal search.

Step 1: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile

Search for your business name on Google Maps. If a profile exists, claim it. If not, create one at business.google.com. Google will ask you to verify, usually by video, phone or email depending on the business. You can't manage most features until verification is done.

While you're there:

  • Use your real business name exactly as it appears on your signboard. Google's guidelines don't allow extra keywords in the name. "Sharma Electronics" is fine. "Sharma Electronics Best AC Repair Anand Cheap" breaks the rules and risks suspension.
  • Show your address if customers visit you. If you travel to customers, like a plumber or a home tutor, set a service area and hide the address.
  • Add your phone number, website and opening hours. Update holiday hours before Diwali and Uttarayan, because nothing frustrates a customer more than driving to a closed shop.

Step 2: Choose the right categories

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Pick the most specific one that describes your main business. A coaching class should use something like "Coaching center" or a specific tutoring category, not just "School".

Add secondary categories for other things you genuinely do. Don't add categories for services you don't offer. It confuses customers and doesn't help.

Step 3: Fill in every field that applies

Most profiles in Anand and Nadiad are half empty. Fill in:

  • Business description in plain language: what you do, who for, and where. Mention the areas you serve naturally.
  • Services or products, with short descriptions.
  • Attributes, such as wheelchair access, online appointments, or languages spoken.
  • Photos of the outside of your shop (so people can find it), the inside, your team and your work. Add new ones every month.
  • Booking or appointment links if you use them.

Google recommends keeping information complete and current. It's also simply what customers want before they call you.

Step 4: Make your name, address and phone consistent everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should match across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Instagram, Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha and any industry directories.

Small differences add up. "F-6, Vihang Trade Center" on one site and "Shop 6, Vihang Complex" on another makes it harder for Google to be confident they're the same business. Pick one format and use it everywhere.

Then check old listings. If you've moved or changed numbers, update or close the old ones. Old numbers on directory sites are a common reason businesses lose calls without knowing it.

Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMARTName, phone, categoryOld phone numbers, duplicate listings

Step 5: Build a steady flow of genuine reviews

Reviews affect both ranking and whether someone chooses you. Google's policy is clear on what you can and can't do:

  • You can ask every customer for a review, and share your review link by WhatsApp, SMS or a QR code at the counter.
  • You can't offer discounts, gifts or payment for reviews.
  • You can't ask only happy customers (this is called review gating) or discourage negative reviews.
  • Reviews from employees or people with a conflict of interest get removed.

Reply to every review, good and bad, within a few days. A calm, specific reply to a complaint often does more for your reputation than ten five-star reviews. I'll cover review collection in detail in a separate guide.

Step 6: Create a page on your website for each service and area

Your Google Business Profile links to your website, and Google uses both. A single home page that says "We do everything" gives Google little to work with.

Create a separate page for each main service. If you genuinely serve more than one town, create location pages that say something specific about that area, like which neighbourhoods you cover, how long a visit takes, or a local project. Don't create twenty copy-paste pages that only swap the town name. Google treats those as doorway pages, and they can hurt more than help.

On each page:

  • Put the service and town in the page title and main heading.
  • Answer the questions customers actually ask: how pricing works, timelines, what's included.
  • Add your address and phone number, and a map embed on the contact page.
  • Make sure the page loads fast on a phone.

If your website needs work first, our guide on how much a website costs in Gujarat explains what to look for.

Step 7: Add local business schema to your website

Schema is code that tells search engines your business name, address, phone, hours and type in a structured format. Google's Search Central documentation describes LocalBusiness structured data and how it can be used for business details in search. Your developer can add it quickly. Test it with Google's Rich Results Test.

Step 8: Earn local mentions and links

Prominence grows when other local sites mention you. Good sources in Anand and Nadiad include:

  • Local business associations and chambers of commerce.
  • Colleges and schools you work with, for example as a training partner or event sponsor.
  • Local news sites when you do something newsworthy.
  • Suppliers and partners who list their dealers or clients.

Step 9: Post updates and answer questions

Google Business Profile lets you post updates, offers and events. They don't replace the basics above, but they show customers you're active. Post when something real changes, like a new batch, a seasonal service, or new stock.

Check the questions section of your profile too. Anyone can ask, and anyone can answer. If you don't answer, a stranger might, wrongly.

Step 10: Measure what's working

Your Google Business Profile shows how many people called, asked for directions, or clicked to your website. Google Search Console shows which searches bring people to your site. Check both monthly.

Track the real outcome too. Ask every new customer how they found you, and write it down. If "Google Maps" keeps coming up, your local SEO is working.

Local SEO checklist split into one-time tasks for this week and recurring monthly tasks
Do the left column once, this week. Repeat the right column every month.

A worked example: auditing one profile

Here's an illustrative audit (not a real client) of the kind we do in a first meeting. A computer repair shop in Anand finds that it doesn't appear for "laptop repair Anand", even though it's been open for years.

What we check, in order:

  1. Name: "XYZ Computers Laptop Repair Best Service Anand". Keywords in the name. Fix: use the signboard name only.
  2. Primary category: "Computer store". The shop mostly repairs laptops. Fix: a repair category as primary, store as secondary.
  3. Hours: Missing Sunday closure, so people turn up to a closed shutter. Fix: correct hours, and add holiday hours.
  4. Photos: Three blurry photos from years ago. Fix: shopfront, counter, repair bench, team.
  5. Reviews: A handful, the latest from long ago, no replies. Fix: a review link on WhatsApp after every repair, and replies to existing reviews.
  6. Website: One page with no mention of laptop repair. Fix: a laptop repair page with the town in the title.
  7. Directories: Justdial listing shows an old phone number. Fix: update it.

None of these needed money. All of them needed someone to sit down and do them.

How long does local SEO take?

A newly verified, complete profile can start appearing for some searches within weeks. Competitive searches take longer, often several months of consistent work on reviews, content and mentions. Anyone who promises the number one spot on Google Maps in a fixed time is promising something Google itself says can't be bought.

Where to go from here

Work through steps 1 to 5 this week. They cost nothing except time, and they're where most local businesses in Anand fall short.

If you'd rather have someone handle it, our SEO services in Anand and SEO services in Nadiad pages explain how we work. If you'd like to learn it yourself, our SEO training course covers local SEO in depth.

FAQ

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Google Ads is a separate paid product, and you don't need it to appear in local results.

Can I add keywords to my business name on Google?

No. Google's guidelines say your business name should match your real-world name, as used on your signage and stationery. Adding keywords can lead to your profile being suspended.

How many reviews do I need to rank on Google Maps?

There's no fixed number. Reviews are one part of prominence. Aim for a steady flow of genuine reviews from real customers, and reply to them. Compare yourself with the businesses that show up above you for your main search.

Do I need a website for local SEO?

You can appear on Google Maps without one, but a website with clear service pages makes your profile more relevant and gives customers more reasons to choose you. It also helps you rank in normal search results below the map.

Should I list my business on Justdial and IndiaMART?

Listing on major directories used in your industry helps customers find you and supports consistent business details across the web. Make sure the name, address and phone match your Google Business Profile exactly.
