PMP Exam Pattern 2026: The ECO Explained (and How to Prepare for It)

The PMP exam changed on 9 July 2026, when PMI's new Examination Content Outline (ECO) replaced the January 2021 version. The new exam has three domains weighted People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%, and it delivers 180 questions (170 scored, 10 unscored) in 240 minutes. Roughly 40% of the content reflects predictive approaches and 60% agile or hybrid. The biggest shift is Business Environment, which jumped from 8% to 26%.

I first wrote this guide before the switch and have updated it for the live exam. If you studied from material built on the 2021 outline, this is the post to read before you book.

What is the PMP Examination Content Outline?

The ECO is PMI's published blueprint for the PMP exam. It lists the domains, the tasks inside each domain and how much of the exam each domain carries. Every serious practice question, mock exam and prep course should trace back to it. You can download the 2026 PMP Examination Content Outline (PDF) from pmi.org.

If your study material still follows the 2021 outline, you'll over-study some areas and under-study the one that grew most.

What are the three PMP domains and their weights?

  • People, 33% (was 42%). Leading teams, building shared understanding, resolving conflict, supporting performance, and engaging stakeholders.
  • Process, 41% (was 50%). Planning and managing scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, resources and communications, across predictive, agile and hybrid delivery.
  • Business Environment, 26% (was 8%). Delivering and measuring business value, governance and compliance, organisational change, and newer topics such as sustainability and the use of AI in projects.

The new outline also has fewer tasks: 26 in total (8 People, 10 Process, 8 Business Environment), down from 35.

What changed from the 2021 PMP exam?

Three things matter most for your study plan.

Business Environment is no longer a small slice. At 26% it's roughly one question in four. Value delivery, benefits, governance and strategic alignment now need real study time, not a quick skim.

Exam time went up. The old exam gave 230 minutes for 180 questions. The new one gives 240 minutes, with two optional 10-minute breaks and new item formats such as case-study sets (several questions about one project scenario) and graphic-based questions.

It's aligned to the PMBOK Guide, Eighth Edition. Older study guides based on the Seventh Edition still explain principles well, but check that your practice questions reflect the new outline.

Why do agile and hybrid matter so much?

PMI's outline puts about 60% of the exam in agile or hybrid contexts. If your experience is mostly phases, Gantt charts and sign-offs, a large share of questions will feel unfamiliar. The exam wants you to choose the right approach for the situation: predictive when requirements are stable, adaptive when they are still being discovered, and a blend when parts of the project differ. Our guide to agile, predictive and hybrid on the PMP goes deeper.

What do PMP questions actually feel like?

Most questions are situational. You're placed in a scenario and asked for the best next action. Two or three answers are often defensible, and the correct one reflects what PMI calls the project manager's mindset. In practice that tends to mean:

  • support and empower the team rather than command it,
  • deal with problems early instead of reacting late,
  • talk to the people involved before escalating,
  • protect the team's ability to deliver value.

You build this through repetition and review, not overnight memorisation.

Why are exam "dumps" a bad idea?

Some candidates look for recycled "real question" dumps. They are risky for three reasons. Most were written for the 2021 outline, so the domain balance is now wrong. Memorising answers doesn't build the judgement the scenarios test. And sharing live exam content breaks PMI's certification rules. Properly explained practice questions are both safer and more useful.

How should you prepare for the 2026 PMP exam?

  1. Check your material is built for the July 2026 outline, including Business Environment and the new question formats.
  2. Weight your study like the exam. Give Business Environment real time now.
  3. Practise predictive, agile and hybrid scenarios, since all three appear throughout.
  4. Tag every practice question with its domain and principle, so your weak spots become visible.
  5. Take full-length timed mocks to practise the four-hour format.

A week-by-week version is in our 30-day PMP study plan. For sample questions written to the new outline, see our PMP practice questions with answers.
