What Makes a Digital Marketing Agency the Best? A Buyer's Checklist

The best digital marketing agency for you is the one that can show relevant results, explains its work in plain language, reports on leads and sales rather than vanity numbers, lets you own your ad accounts and data, and is honest about what it can't promise. Size and awards matter much less than whether the people doing your work understand your kind of business and tell you the truth when a campaign isn't working.

I'm writing this as someone who sits on both sides. At TechNet Consultancy we provide SEO and ads services, and we also train marketers who later work in agencies or hire them. So this is the checklist I'd want a business owner in Anand or Vadodara to use on us as well as on anyone else.

What should a good digital marketing agency actually do?

At minimum, a good agency should:

  • understand your business model, margins and customers before proposing tactics,
  • recommend channels based on where your customers are, not on what the agency happens to sell,
  • set up proper tracking (Google Analytics 4, conversion tracking in Google Ads and Meta, call and WhatsApp tracking),
  • run the work, test changes, and report what happened in terms you understand,
  • tell you when a channel isn't paying for itself.

That last one is the real test. An agency that never recommends spending less isn't advising you.

How do you check an agency's track record?

Ask for two or three case studies from businesses like yours, in size or industry. A useful case study states the starting point, what was changed, the time frame, and the outcome in leads or sales. Vague claims like "boosted visibility" or giant impression numbers tell you very little.

Then ask to speak to a current client. A confident agency will arrange it. Look the agency up on Google Maps and read the reviews, especially the critical ones and how the agency replied.

Who should own the ad accounts, website and data?

You should. Your Google Ads account, Meta Business Manager, Google Analytics property, Search Console, Google Business Profile and domain should be in your company's name, with the agency added as a user or partner. If the relationship ends, you keep the history and data.

Some agencies run ads from their own accounts and won't hand them over. That makes it very hard to switch, and you lose years of performance data. Agree on ownership in writing before any work starts.

What does honest reporting look like?

A good monthly report answers four questions: what did we spend, what did we get (leads, calls, sales), what did we change, and what will we do next. It connects platform numbers to business outcomes.

Watch out for reports that are mostly impressions, reach, followers and "engagement", with no link to enquiries. Those metrics have their place, but they are easy to inflate and hard to pay salaries with.

Which services should a full-service agency offer?

Not every business needs every service. The common ones are:

  • SEO and content: getting found in Google and, increasingly, in AI answers. See what this involves in our guide to SEO strategies for Gujarat businesses.
  • Paid search and social: Google Ads, Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads, sometimes LinkedIn or YouTube.
  • Social media management: content calendars, creative and community replies.
  • Email and WhatsApp marketing: follow-ups and offers to people who already know you.
  • Website and landing pages: because ads and SEO both fail if the page doesn't convert.
  • Analytics: dashboards that tie spend to results.

A specialist agency that does one or two of these very well can be a better choice than a full-service shop that does all of them averagely.

How should digital marketing agencies charge?

The common models are a fixed monthly retainer, a percentage of ad spend, a project fee, or some performance-linked element. Each can work. What matters is that you know exactly what's included, how many hours or deliverables you get, whether ad spend is paid directly by you to Google and Meta (it should be), and what the notice period is.

Be careful with very cheap packages promising a fixed number of posts and backlinks each month. The work is usually generic, and cheap backlinks can break Google's spam policies.

What are the red flags when hiring an agency?

  • Guaranteed first-page rankings or guaranteed lead numbers. Google states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking.
  • Refusing to give you admin access to your own accounts.
  • Long lock-in contracts before any results.
  • Reports with no connection to leads or revenue.
  • Testimonials or case studies that can't be verified.
  • Pressure to start immediately with a "limited-time" discount.

What questions should you ask before signing?

  1. Who will actually work on my account, and how much experience do they have?
  2. Can you show results for a business similar to mine?
  3. Will I own all accounts and data?
  4. What will you report each month, and can I see a sample?
  5. What would make you recommend pausing a channel?
  6. What is the notice period, and what happens to the work if we part ways?

FAQ

How do I know if a digital marketing agency is good?

Look for relevant case studies with real numbers, verifiable reviews, clear reporting tied to leads or sales, and willingness to let you own your accounts. A good agency also tells you what it can't promise.

Should I hire a local agency in Gujarat or a national one?

A local agency understands the local market, language and competition, and you can meet them. A national agency may have deeper specialists. Choose on relevant experience and communication, not location alone.

How much should a small business spend on digital marketing?

It depends on your margins, goals and competition. Many small businesses start with a modest test budget for one channel, measure cost per lead, and increase spend only where the numbers work.

Can an agency guarantee results?

No honest agency guarantees rankings or exact lead counts, because search engines and ad auctions are outside their control. They can commit to activities, transparency and response times.

Is it better to train my own team or hire an agency?

Many businesses do both: an agency for specialist execution and a trained in-house person who understands the numbers and can manage the agency.
